The North of Fuerteventura was the first area on Fuerteventura to be developed for tourism in the early 60'ties. Ideal surfing conditions, splendid beaches and an existing infrastructure - although primitive at that time - were the decisive elements. The North of Fuerteventura is home to the following important villages:
Corralejo, El Cotillo, Lajares, Villaverde, La Oliva, Tindaya.
Corralejo: ancient fishing village with a modernised town centre. There is one main street with a handful of short side streets that contain the majority of Shops. Worthwhile visiting for Restaurants and Bars are the music square, Calle La Iglesia, Muelle Chico, Paseo Maritimo (all 3 in the old town), Shopping Centre La Menara and surroundings (Centre of town) and Shopping Centres El Campanario and Palmeral.
The centre of Fuerteventura has economically two major areas: the capital and the recently built tourism and golf centre Castillo or Caleta de Fuste. The centre of Fuerteventura is very diverse in geography, history and economic activity. The most important villages/towns are:
Puerto del Rosario, Caleta de Fuste, Betancuria, Antigua, Ajuy.
.JPG)
Puerto del Rosario: evolved from an ancient mooring spot in 1426 to take in water and food for the journey to the actual capital of Fuerteventura. Puerto del Rosario is not affected by mass tourism. Once a week the Cruise ship AÏDA docks in the harbour and streets in Puerto become somewhat livelier. There are 4 main streets for shopping, a couple of museums and some nice bars and restaurants.
The South of Fuerteventura was the last area to be developed as a tourist area on the island as there was a need to create an infrastructure first. Nowadays, it represents the most important tourist area of Fuerteventura with sandy beaches, optimal surfing conditions and plenty of recreational and nightlife possibilities. The most important villages are:
Costa Calma, Jandia, Morro Jable, Pajara, Gran Tarajal, Cofete.
Costa Calma: once a barren area, this place has been transformed into a little oasis with user-friendly accommodation. They recently built a new promenade along the main street that joins the 2 roundabouts. Miles of white sandy beaches invite old and young to enjoy beach-time at full. But here, at “Playa Barca”, is also a hot spot for windsurfers due to unique geographical conditions that provide stronger winds than in the surrounding areas. No wonder that the international surf centre “Rene Egli” is located here. You can walk on the beach for miles. This is beach holiday at its best.
Welcome!
Dear Reader – visitor or resident – the Spirit Team wishes you and your family an enjoyable 2nd half of 2014. Traditionally, this time of the year offers several popular events like the Int'l Open Deep Sea Fishing contest, Coast-to-Coast running. Lobos-Corralejo swim contest, FudeNaS Biking, Int'l ½ Marathon Dunas de Fuerteventura, Int'l Kite Festival, etc. So, plenty of opportunities to enjoy: for those who want to participate and let their muscles work and for those who want to see others sweat.
Another event, worth mentioning, is stargazing. With a bit of luck (in a dark area and with no clouds), you will be able to see our galaxy, the Milky Way, some planets and maybe even shooting stars.
The marine turtles visit the Canary Islands on their migration from the US coasts to Africa. Although they visit these islands all year, the peak is in the summer.
There are 8 species known of the marine turtles that are found in the subtropical and tropical seas. These species originated from about 60-10 million years ago and developed from a much more ancient ancestor, some 200 million years ago. Some 130 million years ago, they were abundant and managed to survive cataclysmic events, unlike the dinosaurs. But since then, they have not changed significantly. They have a characteristic shape due to their bone shell that covers the viscera and efficiently protects them.

According to my memory, I grew up as a normal kid. However, I have been mobbed in school and couldn't get help from my parents. "Don't pay attention" or "it won't be that bad" they answered. This situation at school and the unbelief of my parents resulted in my shyness. The fear of being marked as "weird", led to my social isolation. I became a timid person. Then, after education, I have been mobbed at work to such an extent that, at occasions, I had suicidal thoughts. I wondered "Is this going to be my life?" The moment that I really hit the bottom of my misery, at the age of 27, I met my future wife. She invited me for a drink and I remember that I was very silent, being afraid to make errors and stupid remarks. I couldn't imagine that a woman would be interested in me. My self-esteem was at such a low level. She became my first date. Thanks to her perseverance, I slowly but steadily crawled out of the pit. She constantly mentioned to me that I had a lot to offer and that I was a loving person.
"La Apañada" is the collection by the herds of all free roaming goats on Fuerteventura to a central point in order to return them to the rightful owner. The practice of letting the animals run freely is part of the local folklore, but although it looks like a disorganised "letting-go", it is much controlled by the Fuerteventura Agricultural Department.
Depending on the consulted source of information, lace was introduced to the Canary Islands in the 19th century from mainland Spain or from Madeira. Before commercialisation by English entrepreneurs, making lace on Fuerteventura was a domestic activity. It soon became famous for its quality and the export to the UK and USA was booming during 1890 - 1910. Export to Germany and France followed soon. Main areas of production on Fuerteventura were Lajares, La Oliva and Betancuria.
Philippe Laurent, business owner at La Folie des Délices in Corralejo, presents his new creation: the Macaron Gofio, a meringue shell with Gofio and filled with Gofio and Truffe de Lait (Milk Truffle). Philippe builds on 3 generations of pastry making which has resulted in this new member of the Macaron Parisien, two shells that are combined with any kind of tasty filling. The key to a maximum culinary experience is quality of the products, know-how and freshness.
Lucha Canaria is a special type of wrestling that has been on the islands since ancient times. It is a heritage from the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canaries. The first written reference to the sport was made in the 1400's in a chronicle that treated the visit of conquered Guanches to the King Juan II of Castilla in mainland Spain.
What is Raw Food? Raw Food plays an important role for a vegan-based diet that is using uncooked foodstuff which still contains all its original nutrients and enzymes. Regular intake of raw food is compulsory to create and maintain health and should be part of our daily diet. Raw Food also represents an attitude to life, which is respectful to animals and nature in general. What 's the catch? You will improve your energy and vitality level, balance out your weight, increase your mental strength and awareness, avoid illnesses in a more natural way, rejuvenate as it is a natural anti-aging component, improve the appearance of your skin and hair and you will improve your overall well being.
Photographer and philosopher.
Having worked as a bricklayer in Ireland, Brian one day decided to do something different and left his home in 2001 with the naive idea of living the life of a beach bum kite boarding on Fuerteventura. Then a couple of years later with no warning decided to buy a camera and explore photography. Through rabid curiosity and practice, he has managed in only nine years to create some stunning photography, reaching the point where his unique images now bring light into fine homes and businesses in every continent throughout the world.
Klaus Berends is an artist who combines in his work (and even more in his personal attitude) four major elements which allow him to discover the right orientation of creativity: curiosity, observation, experimenting and imagination.
Berends is creative on different media, although he combines some techniques because each of them alone sometimes are coming too short to answer his creative restlessness.

(Spiegel Bestseller)
