Spirit of Fuerteventura welcomes you on their page “Home & Property” where you can find info on different topics like interior and exterior home decoration, gardens, pools, spas, plants, pets (dogs, cats, etc), OKAPI - a non-profit organisation to help animals, recipes, etc and about real estate opportunities and -maintenance.
In September 2009 OKAPI organised a second cat castration campaign in the North of Fuerteventura whereby 232 cats were treated. During the January campaign in the South, 168 cats were treated. Altogether 400 cats!!! Focus is the castration, de-worming and de-bugging of wild and hotel cats. Ill cats will receive medical treatment.
The initiative of regular cat castration is meant to reduce their suffering as many times cat babies are found without their mother. Castrated cats are more bound to their territory, are less aggressive and will look better. In order to allow their identification, their left ear tip is being cut (under narcosis).
For the September campaign, the flights of the German participants were sponsored by the REWE Group, the Hotel Oasis Dunas provided space for the surgery room and the Aloe Club supplied lodging for the vets. The Tierhilfe Fuerteventura (THF), based in Germany and partner of OKAPI, organised most of the campaign as many of the participants (Vets and catchers) came from there. These people sacrifice their holidays and work for free. The other costs are paid by THF and can total up to 3000 to 5000 euros for surgery material, rental cars, gas, etc.
Unfortunately, we do not have enough free workers to catch the cats. Candidates are welcome and should have a car and plenty of time available. Also we are happy about all info on where many non-castrated cats are spotted, especially around garbage bins etc.
