Spirit of Fuerteventura welcomes you on their page “Home & Property” where you can find info on different topics like interior and exterior home decoration, gardens, pools, spas, plants, pets (dogs, cats, etc), OKAPI - a non-profit organisation to help animals, recipes, etc and about real estate opportunities and -maintenance.
Recently OKAPI found on a finca around Majanicho, between heaps of waste, a bunch of animals like 74 dogs, 7 cats, goats, cheap, parrots, hens, turkeys and ferrets. The owner of the finca, Manolo, was happy to co-operate – as he did before when we went out to solve a problem – and an 8-step rescue plan was generated, together with “Twinkle Trust”.
The first action was at the end of April and included the castration of 7 cats with the help of “Twinkle Trust”, an association that is dedicated to the castration of wild cats.
The second action was on 14th May when OKAPI visited the owner to establish the different steps to make.
The third action was on the 21st May when OKAPI found a female dog with a tumour on her mammals that was so far developed that nothing could have saved her. She was put to sleep. A caesarean was done to a Bardino that was pregnant. Also 8 Podenco pups were taken away from the finca because they lived in a place filled with waste, dirt and they were overloaded with fleas and ticks and put in a home where we could treat them properly. They all are fine now.
The fourth action was on the 26th of May and was supported by many volunteers to clean up the infested environment with some disinfectant. Many dogs were taken out of their small cages and were transferred to bigger ones with a lot more ventilation. We had to leave 4 Bardinos in their cage because they were too wild and we didn’t have the adequate material. We also took a parrot away to a better place.
The fifth action was on the 30th of May and – again with the help of volunteers – we cleaned up and prepared larger areas for the 4 Bardinos and the Podencos.
The sixth action was on the 3rd June when we took 6 female dogs to sterilise them and 2 were put in the La Oliva dog pound where two of our associates are working.
The seventh action on the 4th June we had to put the 4 Bardinos to sleep as they were too wild to be adopted and killed 3 companion dogs on the finca the day before.
The eighth action on the 5th June we vaccinated the 4 female dogs on the finca. Today there are 43 dogs and 4 female dogs plus 9 pups remaining on the finca. From these 47 dogs about 50% are hunting dogs (Canarian Podencos and Pointers) for which it is rather difficult to find a foster home.
The future plans are to castrate the remaining 43 dogs and vaccinate them. And of course to find foster homes for all of them. But meanwhile, we will have to keep them on the finca due to lack of space. As a consequence, we will have to keep the finca clean as the bugs could return within 15 days. We therefore need:
FUMIGATION: a treatment by a specialised company to disinfect the living area with chemicals that cost 6.300 euros,
The castration of 43 dogs at 60 euros per dog which totals to 2.580 euros,
DRONTAL: tablets against intestine parasites which costs 606 euros.
The total is 9.486 euros and we only have collected 1.066,60 euros so far, leaving us with a gap of 8.419,40 euros.
We hope that the information in this article will touch you and that you will spread out the word to help us in this major project, knowing that this is not the only project that we currently have, but many more.
