The North of Fuerteventura was the first area on Fuerteventura to be developed for tourism in the early 60'ties. Ideal surfing conditions, splendid beaches and an existing infrastructure - although primitive at that time - were the decisive elements. The North of Fuerteventura is home to the following interesting villages:
Corralejo, El Cotillo, Lajares, Villaverde, La Oliva, Tindaya, Vallebrón.
Corralejo: ancient fishing village with a modernised town centre. There is one main street with a handful of short side streets that contain the majority of shops. Worthwhile visiting for restaurants and bars are the Music Square at the end of the main street, Calle La Iglesia which is connected to the Music Square, Muelle Chico - the ancient harbour, Paseo Maritimo - the walkway north of Corralejo which starts at the entrance of the Corralejo Harbour, Shopping Centre La Menara and surroundings (Centre of town) and the Shopping Centres El Campanario and El Palmeral.
But there certainly are some more gems on other locations, too many to list. Just stroll around and discover them, with the “Spirit of Fuerteventura” magazine as your guide. Corralejo has beautiful beaches with plenty of sports and leisure possibilities. The dunes (a national park) in the south of the town are world famous and are one of the must-see items of Fuerteventura. The island of Lobos can be visited to enjoy nature, tranquillity and the small beach. There are regular ferries to Lanzarote.
El Cotillo: is an old port from the 17th century that now is a popular tourist area, although still quiet which results in a particular atmosphere. El Cotillo has beautiful beaches. There are 2 harbours, the old one is in the middle of the village where you have really good restaurants and the new one is at the south of the village, surrounded by restaurants. Please visit El Toston, the little fortress which occasionally houses art exhibitions by local artists. The south beaches are a hot spot for surf freaks and the north beaches, a series of pretty lagoons, are superb for families. Some beaches further up north are visited by nudists (sorry, no pictures available).
Lajares: a surfer's community village between Corralejo and El Cotillo that has a local lace production which can be visited. From here you can start your walk to the Volcano “Bayuyo”. There are a few cosy food and drink spots.
Villaverde: small agricultural village with a local museum of ethnic art “Rosalinda”. There are some good restaurants. You can visit a million-year old lava tunnel Llano de la Cueva.
La Oliva: Capital of the municipality “La Oliva” where you can visit the ancient military headquarters Casa de los Coroneles, an agricultural museum Museo del Grano and a nice church Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.
Tindaya: sleepy village with a nice beach and the sacred mountain Montaña Tindaya that can be ascended only upon previous authorisation (heavy fines!). Other interesting places here are mountain Montaña La Muda and Montaña Quemada with the statue of Unamuno, that both can be ascended too. All of them give superb views. After the climbing you can refresh yourself at the bar Podomorfo, at the West of the village.
Vallebron: a small and quiet village, that you can drive to coming from Tindaya. It is located in the hills and you can stop halfway to enjoy superb views over the Montaña Tindaya and the west coast of Fuerteventura.
